Quebec winters are hard on floors and on installation schedules. A common question we hear in the Montreal area is whether epoxy flooring can be installed in winter. The short answer: yes, with the right conditions. Here is what matters.
Epoxy needs warmth to cure
Epoxy is a chemical reaction, and that reaction depends on temperature. Most systems need the space – and the concrete slab itself – to stay above roughly 10-15 C during application and curing (usually 24-48 hours). Below that, the epoxy cures slowly, unevenly, or not at all.
Heated spaces: year-round
If your garage, basement, or commercial space is heated, winter installation is no problem. Finished basements and climate-controlled commercial floors can be done any month of the year in Montreal.
Unheated garages and warehouses
For unheated spaces, we either bring in temporary heating to hold the right temperature, or schedule the work for spring or fall. Coating a frozen slab is a recipe for failure – adhesion and finish both suffer.
Winter is a smart time to book
Because demand peaks in spring and summer, winter is often the easiest time to schedule a heated-space project, and to get on the calendar early for an outdoor project once the weather warms.
